The discovery came on Friday as I patrolled the pastures to check on the cattle. To my complete surprise, I found a day-old bull calf running around the east pasture with its mother, Faun, and the rest of Jocko's herd. I decided to name the calf Foxfire. Then, to my further amazement, I found another bull calf running around the west pasture with his mother, Ruby, and the rest of Akela's herd. We named the second calf Renegade.
The calves were such a surprise because John had been told that no breeding of the cattle or sheep had taken place during the year he was away from home. Later John found out that either a gate had been left open or Akela had pushed his way through it sometime in late September.
